Cover: 14 Common Wix Website Mistakes That Quietly Cost You Enquiries

Wix makes it easy to build a website that looks good. It does not automatically make it a website that brings you enquiries. We review many Wix sites for business owners who say the same thing: "People compliment the website, but the phone does not ring."

Almost always, the cause is a handful of small, fixable mistakes. Here are the fourteen we see most often, grouped by area, with what to do about each.

Design and content mistakes

1. A homepage that does not say what you do

Visitors decide very quickly whether they are in the right place. A large slider with a stock photo and a slogan like "Excellence in Every Step" tells them nothing. Your first screen should state plainly what you offer, where, and for whom - for example, "Physiotherapy clinic in Mansarovar, Jaipur - home visits available" - with a clear button to call, WhatsApp or book.

2. Template text and placeholder content left behind

Lorem ipsum in the footer, a sample blog post titled "Welcome to My Blog", or a team section with stock names destroys trust instantly. Before launch, click through every page, every lightbox and every hidden section.

3. Text inside images

Writing your service list, offer or address inside a banner image looks tidy in the editor, but search engines cannot read it reliably, screen readers cannot read it, and it often becomes illegible on a phone. Use real text on top of images instead.

4. Too many fonts, colours and animations

Wix offers endless effects. Using lots of them makes a site feel cluttered and slows it down. Pick two fonts, a small colour palette based on your brand, and use animation sparingly. Good UI/UX design is mostly about restraint.

Mobile mistakes

5. Never checking the mobile layout properly

In the classic Wix Editor, the mobile version is a separate layout. Move something on desktop and the mobile page may end up with overlapping text, buttons off-screen or sections in a strange order. Since most Indian visitors browse on phones, this is the costliest mistake on the list. Check every page on a real phone, not only in the editor preview.

6. Tiny buttons and links

Buttons that are easy to click with a mouse can be hard to tap with a thumb. Make primary buttons large, give them space, and keep the most important action - call, WhatsApp or book - easy to reach on mobile.

7. Hidden or missing contact options

If a visitor has to scroll to the footer to find your number, many will simply go back to Google and call a competitor. Add a visible call button, a WhatsApp chat button and a short enquiry form. Make sure the phone number is clickable on mobile and the WhatsApp link opens a chat with a helpful pre-filled message.

SEO mistakes

8. Default titles and empty meta descriptions

"Home | My Site" is still a common SEO title. Every page needs its own title and description written for the search it should appear in. Wix's page SEO settings make this simple, but they will not fill themselves in. Our Wix SEO checklist walks through the full list.

9. Duplicated pages with duplicated settings

Duplicating a page to create a new one is quick - and it also copies the SEO title, description and often the URL pattern. Result: several pages competing for the same keyword with identical tags. Update every duplicated page fully.

10. Changing URLs without redirects

Renaming "/services" to "/our-services" or moving from an old platform to Wix without setting up 301 redirects throws away the rankings and backlinks the old URLs had earned. Use the URL Redirect Manager whenever a URL changes.

Speed and technical mistakes

11. Heavy media everywhere

Autoplay background videos, huge uncompressed photos, image galleries with dozens of full-resolution files and multiple sliders on one page all add weight. Wix optimises a lot automatically, but it cannot make a very heavy page light. Use video sparingly, resize images before upload and test pages in Google PageSpeed Insights on a mobile setting.

12. App overload

It is tempting to install a pop-up app, a chat app, a review widget, a social feed, a countdown timer and a currency converter. Each one can add scripts to every page. Install only what serves a clear purpose, and remove apps you stopped using - simply hiding them is not always enough.

Ownership and business mistakes

13. The account or domain is not in your name

We regularly meet owners whose Wix account, premium plan or domain is registered under a freelancer's email address. When that person becomes unreachable, the business loses control of its own website. Make sure:

  • The Wix account is created with a business email you control
  • The domain is registered in your business's name
  • Designers, developers and agencies are added as collaborators with appropriate roles
  • You know when the plan and domain renew

14. No tracking, so no learning

If Google Analytics and Search Console are not connected, you cannot tell which pages bring enquiries, which searches you appear for, or whether a change helped. Set up tracking at launch and mark form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks as key events.

Quick self-audit table

Spend fifteen minutes with this table on your own site:

| Area | Question | Fix if "no" |
|---|---|---|
| Message | Does the first screen say what, where and for whom? | Rewrite hero headline and button |
| Mobile | Does every page look right on a real phone? | Adjust mobile view page by page |
| Contact | Can a mobile visitor call or WhatsApp in one tap? | Add sticky call and chat buttons |
| SEO | Does every page have a unique title and description? | Fill in page SEO settings |
| URLs | Do old URLs redirect to new pages? | Add 301 redirects |
| Speed | Do key pages pass a mobile speed test reasonably? | Reduce media and apps |
| Ownership | Are the account and domain in your business's name? | Transfer ownership |
| Tracking | Are Analytics and Search Console connected? | Connect and set key events |

Fix or rebuild?

Most of these mistakes can be fixed on the existing site in a short, focused project. A rebuild makes more sense when:

  • The site has no clear page structure and every page tries to do everything
  • The brand has changed significantly
  • The classic Editor mobile layout has become hard to manage and you want responsive design in Wix Studio
  • Your needs have outgrown Wix and you need custom integrations - in which case a broader website development discussion is worth having

How to prioritise the fixes

If several of these mistakes apply to your site, you do not have to fix everything at once. Work in this order, because each step protects the value of the next:

  1. Ownership first. Make sure the account and domain are in your business's name. Every other fix is wasted if you can lose control of the site.
  2. Contact options and mobile layout. These affect every visitor today, so fixing them brings the quickest improvement in enquiries.
  3. Homepage message. A clearer first screen helps every other page, because most visitors land on or pass through it.
  4. Redirects and SEO settings. These protect and build search visibility over the following weeks and months.
  5. Speed and app clean-up. Remove what you do not use, then re-test.
  6. Tracking. Once tracking is in place, you can measure whether each later change actually helped.

Keep a short log of what you changed and when. If enquiries rise or fall, you will know what caused it instead of guessing.

Key takeaways

  • A beautiful Wix site can still lose enquiries through unclear messaging and hidden contact options.
  • The mobile view is where most damage happens - check every page on a real phone.
  • Fill in SEO titles, descriptions and redirects; Wix does not do it for you.
  • Keep media and apps lean to protect speed.
  • Make sure your business owns the Wix account and the domain.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

In the classic Wix Editor, the mobile view is a separate layout generated from the desktop design. Changes on desktop do not always carry over cleanly, so elements can overlap or appear in the wrong order. Review and adjust the mobile view for every page, or use Wix Studio, which works with responsive breakpoints.

In the classic Wix Editor you cannot switch a published site to a different template. You can redesign the existing site page by page, or build a new site and move your domain and premium plan to it.

They can. Each app may load extra scripts, styles or content. Install only what you use, remove unused apps and re-test page speed after adding anything new.

Your business should own the Wix account and the domain. Agencies and freelancers can be added as collaborators with the right roles, so you keep control if you ever change vendor.

If the structure is sound and the problems are mostly content, mobile layout and SEO settings, fixing is usually enough. If the site has no clear page structure, poor branding and many workarounds, a planned rebuild is often cleaner.
