Shopify makes it easy to open a store in an afternoon. It is much harder to open a store that actually sells - one that loads fast on mobile, takes UPI and COD smoothly, issues correct GST invoices and gives buyers enough confidence to complete a purchase from a brand they have never heard of.
This guide walks through the setup in the order we follow for Indian brands. It assumes you have decided Shopify is the right platform (if you have not, see our comparison of WooCommerce and Shopify for Indian businesses first).
Before you touch Shopify: get these ready
Most launch delays are not technical. They come from missing content and undecided business rules. Prepare these first:
- Product data: names, descriptions, variants (size, colour), SKUs, weights and HSN codes.
- Product photos: consistent backgrounds, multiple angles, and at least one lifestyle image for hero products.
- Business details: registered business name, address, GSTIN (if registered), support phone and email.
- Policies: shipping, returns, refunds, cancellation, privacy and terms of service.
- Decisions: which states or countries you ship to, whether you offer COD, free-shipping rules and return windows.
Step 1: Create the store and set the basics
Sign up, then go to Settings and fill in:
- Store details - legal business name, address and contact information. This appears on invoices and order emails.
- Store currency - Indian Rupee for an India-focused store.
- Time zone - India Standard Time, so order times and reports are correct.
- Units - metric weights for shipping calculations.
- Staff accounts - add team members with only the permissions they need, rather than sharing the owner login.
Make sure the store account is in your company's name with your own email - not a freelancer's or agency's.
Step 2: Choose and customise a theme
Shopify's Online Store 2.0 themes let you add sections on any page through the theme editor. Start by shortlisting two or three themes and test their demo stores on your phone.
What to look for in a theme
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mobile speed | Most Indian shoppers browse on phones, often on mobile data |
| Clean product page layout | Price, variants, delivery info and the buy button must be visible quickly |
| Filter and search | Essential once you have more than a few dozen products |
| Section flexibility | Lets your team build landing pages without a developer |
| Active updates and support | Themes need maintenance as Shopify evolves |
Free themes like Dawn are fast and a strong base. If your brand needs a distinctive look or special features, consider customising a theme or having a custom theme built.
Step 3: Connect your domain
Buy your domain in your company's name from a registrar you control, then connect it in Settings > Domains. Set your main domain as the primary one so all traffic redirects there. Shopify provides an SSL certificate for connected domains, so the store loads on HTTPS.
Step 4: Add products properly
Product pages do most of the selling. For each product:
- Write a clear title with the product type and key attribute (for example, "Cotton Kurta Set - Indigo Block Print").
- Write a description that answers buyer questions: material, size guide, care instructions, what is in the box, and who it is for.
- Add variants correctly, each with its own SKU, price, inventory and image.
- Set weight accurately - shipping rates depend on it.
- Use collections to group products logically (by category, occasion, price-neutral themes like "Bestsellers" or "New arrivals").
- Fill in the SEO title and meta description for each product and collection.
- Add alt text to images describing what is shown.
Step 5: Set up payments
Shopify's own payment processing is not offered to India-based stores in the same way as in some other countries, so Indian stores typically use a third-party gateway. Check the current options inside Settings > Payments.
Choosing a gateway
- Compare payment methods supported - UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, EMI and pay-later options.
- Check settlement timelines and the onboarding/KYC requirements.
- Test the mobile checkout experience, especially UPI app switching.
- Read Shopify's current terms on transaction fees for third-party gateways for your plan.
Cash on Delivery
Enable COD under manual payment methods if you plan to offer it. Many stores add rules - for example, COD only for certain pin codes or order values - using apps. COD increases conversions for first-time buyers but can raise return-to-origin (RTO) orders, so watch it closely.
Step 6: Configure shipping and delivery
In Settings > Shipping and delivery:
- Create shipping zones (all of India, specific states, or international).
- Set rates - flat, weight-based or free above a threshold you decide.
- Connect a shipping aggregator or courier app (for example Shiprocket or similar services) to automate label creation, tracking and pin-code serviceability checks.
- Show estimated delivery times on product pages if your app supports it. Buyers want to know when it will arrive.
Step 7: Set up taxes and GST invoices
Go to Settings > Taxes and duties and configure India tax settings with your GSTIN. Decide whether prices are shown inclusive of tax (common for B2C in India).
For GST-compliant invoices with GSTIN, HSN codes, place of supply and correct CGST/SGST or IGST split, most stores use a dedicated invoicing app. Confirm your invoice format and tax rates with your chartered accountant - tax rules depend on your products and registration.
Step 8: Publish policies and trust pages
Shopify can generate policy templates under Settings > Policies, but edit them to reflect your real practices. Also create:
- About us - who you are, where you are based, why you started.
- Contact - phone, email, WhatsApp and a real address.
- Shipping and returns - plain-language timelines and process.
- FAQ - sizing, delivery, COD, exchanges.
Under India's Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, e-commerce sellers are expected to display certain information clearly, such as seller details, return and refund policies and grievance contact information. Ask your legal advisor to review these pages.
Step 9: Install only the apps you need
The Shopify App Store is huge, and it is tempting to install everything. Each app can add scripts that slow your store. Start with essentials:
| Need | Typical app category |
|---|---|
| GST invoices | Invoice/PDF generator |
| Shipping and tracking | Shipping aggregator integration |
| Reviews | Product review app |
| WhatsApp | Chat button, order updates, abandoned-cart messages |
| COD control | COD rules and verification |
| Email marketing | Shopify Email or another email tool |
Add more only when there is a clear business reason.
Step 10: Test everything before launch
Run through this checklist on a real phone:
- Place test orders with each payment method, including COD.
- Check order confirmation emails and WhatsApp messages read correctly.
- Verify GST invoice details on a test order.
- Test discount codes and free-shipping rules.
- Confirm shipping rates for different pin codes and weights.
- Check every page for broken links and placeholder text.
- Remove the store password only when everything works.
Step 11: Set up analytics and marketing basics
- Connect Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console, and submit your sitemap (Shopify generates it at /sitemap.xml).
- Add the Meta pixel through the Facebook & Instagram channel if you run ads.
- Set up abandoned checkout reminders - Shopify includes abandoned checkout emails.
- Plan your first campaigns with your digital marketing team.
After launch: the first few weeks
Launch day is the start, not the finish. In the first few weeks, watch these closely:
- Abandoned checkouts: look at where buyers drop off. If many leave at the payment step, test the gateway flow on different phones and UPI apps.
- COD orders and returns: track how many COD orders are refused at the door. Adjust COD rules by pin code or order value if needed.
- Site search terms: what visitors type into your search box tells you which products, sizes or words they expect to find.
- Speed after each new app: run PageSpeed Insights again whenever you add an app.
- Customer questions: every repeated WhatsApp question is a missing line on a product page or FAQ.
Small weekly improvements based on real behaviour usually do more for sales than a big redesign.
Key takeaways
- Prepare product content, policies and business rules before you start building.
- Keep every account - Shopify, domain, gateway - in your company's name.
- Use an Indian payment gateway with UPI, and treat COD as a tool to manage carefully.
- Get GST invoicing right with an app and your CA's guidance.
- Install fewer apps, test on a real phone and only then go live.
