Many businesses serve customers well beyond their home city. A Jaipur software company works with clients across India, a manufacturer ships to dealers in several states, and a service business covers multiple towns in Rajasthan. Naturally, they want to appear when someone searches "service + city" in each of those places.

The usual shortcut is to create dozens of pages that are identical except for the city name. That shortcut rarely works for long. Google calls these doorway pages, and its spam policies are designed to filter them out.

This guide shows how to build a multi-city local SEO presence the right way: fewer, better location pages that genuinely help searchers in each place.

How Google ranks local results

There are two different places you can appear:

The local pack (Google Maps results)

The map box with three businesses. Google says local ranking is based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance means a verified business location near the searcher matters a great deal. You generally cannot rank well here in a city where you have no real presence.

Regular organic results

The blue links below the map. Here, a helpful, specific page about your service in a city can rank even if your office is elsewhere - as long as the page deserves to.

Your strategy should treat these two separately.

Step 1: Decide which locations deserve a page

Create a location page only when you can answer "yes" to most of these:

  • Do we actually serve customers in this place?
  • Is there real search demand for our service in this location?
  • Can we say something specific about serving this place - delivery, travel, local regulations, local industries, team availability?
  • Would a customer in this city find the page more useful than our main service page?

| Situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Real office or branch in the city | Full location page plus a Google Business Profile |
| Regular customers and service delivery, no office | Location page with genuine local detail; no Business Profile |
| Occasional customers only | Mention the city on the main service page; no separate page |
| No customers yet, just hoping | Wait until you have something real to say |

Step 2: Plan your URL and site structure

Keep it clear and consistent. Two common patterns:

  • Service-first: /web-development-company-jaipur, /web-development-company-udaipur
  • Folder-based: /locations/jaipur, /locations/udaipur with service sections on each

For businesses with several services and a few key cities, service-plus-city pages often match search intent best. For businesses with many branches, a location folder with one page per branch works well.

Whichever pattern you choose:

  • Link each location page from a "Locations we serve" hub or the footer
  • Link back to the main service page and related services
  • Avoid creating every possible service-city combination

Step 3: Write content that is genuinely local

This is the difference between a doorway page and a useful one. Good location pages include details that would not make sense on any other city's page:

Local context

  • Industries and business types you commonly serve in that area
  • How you work with clients there - on-site visits, video calls, a local team member
  • Local considerations - for example, tourism and hospitality businesses in Udaipur, textile and handicraft exporters in Jaipur, industrial clusters elsewhere

Real proof

  • Projects you have actually completed for businesses in that city - only real ones, and only with permission
  • Genuine reviews from customers in that area, shown with proper attribution

Practical information

  • Service area and travel or delivery arrangements
  • Response times, support hours and contact methods - phone, WhatsApp, email
  • Directions and office details if you have a branch there

Local FAQs

Questions customers in that place actually ask, answered specifically.

A useful test: if you could swap the city name and the page still made complete sense, it is not local enough.

Step 4: Get the on-page basics right

  • Title tag with the service and city - for example, "SEO Services in Udaipur | Brand Name"
  • One clear H1 that matches the page's intent
  • Meta description written for that city's searchers
  • NAP consistency - name, address and phone exactly matching your Google Business Profile where a real office exists
  • Embedded map only for real addresses
  • Click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons - many local searchers on mobile prefer to call or message

Step 5: Add structured data

  • Use LocalBusiness (or a more specific type) schema on pages for real offices, with address, geo coordinates, opening hours and phone
  • For service-area coverage without an office, describe the areaServed on your Organization or Service schema instead of inventing addresses
  • Add BreadcrumbList and, where you have visible FAQs, FAQPage markup
  • Validate with the Rich Results Test

Step 6: Build local signals

Google Business Profile

For each real location, maintain an accurate, complete profile, with categories, services, photos and regular updates. Never create profiles for addresses where you do not operate.

Local citations

List your business consistently on relevant directories and platforms - JustDial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, industry associations and chambers of commerce - with matching details.

Local links and mentions

Earn links from local business associations, event sponsorships, local news coverage and partners - one genuine local link is worth more than many directory submissions.

Reviews

Ask happy customers in each area to leave honest reviews. Do not buy or script reviews.

Step 7: Measure each location separately

  • Use Search Console to filter performance by location page URL
  • Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions per page as conversions in Google Analytics 4
  • Record the city of each lead in your CRM
  • Review which pages bring real enquiries, then improve or merge weak ones

Mistakes to avoid

  • Copy-paste pages with only the city name swapped
  • Creating pages for every town in the state with no real service there
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices on Google Business Profile
  • Inventing local projects, clients or reviews
  • Keyword-stuffed footers listing dozens of cities
  • Location pages with no internal links pointing to them

Example outline of a strong location page

Here is a structure that works well for a service-plus-city page:

  1. H1 and opening - the service and city, plus one or two sentences on how you serve customers there
  2. Services available in this city - with links to the full service pages
  3. How we work with clients here - visits, video calls, local team, delivery or travel arrangements
  4. Industries and business types we serve locally - specific, not generic
  5. Real work and reviews - only genuine projects and reviews from that area, with permission
  6. Process and timelines - what happens after someone gets in touch
  7. Local FAQs - questions customers in that place actually ask
  8. Contact block - phone, WhatsApp, email and office address if one exists
  9. Nearby areas - links to other genuine location pages

Managing several branches

If you have real offices in several cities:

  • Give each branch its own Google Business Profile, with its own phone number and photos
  • Create one location page for each branch and link the profile to that page, not the home page
  • Keep opening hours, holidays and contact details updated for each branch
  • Ask each branch team to collect reviews from their own customers

Improving location pages over time

Treat location pages as living pages. Add new local projects as they are completed, refresh FAQs based on real enquiries from that city, update team or contact details when they change, and review Search Console queries for each page to find questions you have not answered yet.

Key takeaways

  • Treat the Maps local pack and organic results as separate goals.
  • Create location pages only where you genuinely serve customers and can add specific value.
  • Make each page truly local - context, real proof, practical details and local FAQs.
  • Use accurate schema and never invent addresses or Business Profiles.
  • Measure enquiries by location and improve or merge weak pages.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

In regular organic results, yes - a helpful, specific page about your service in that city can rank. In the Google Maps local pack, proximity and a verified business location matter a lot, so ranking there without a real address in or near the city is much harder.

Doorway pages are many near-identical pages created mainly to rank for variations like "service in city A", "service in city B", with only the city name swapped. Google treats this as spam. Each location page should offer genuinely useful, specific content.

Only for real locations where you have staff and can meet customers, or a genuine service-area operation run from that location. Creating profiles at virtual offices or addresses you do not operate from breaks Google guidelines and can get profiles suspended.

Create pages only for places where you genuinely serve customers and can say something specific and useful. A few strong pages for key cities usually perform better than a long list of thin ones.

If customers in that area search in Hindi or a regional language, a properly written (not just machine-translated) version can help. Use hreflang tags to connect language versions.
